I did a bit of digging into this a couple of months ago and it seems that there are utilities out there that allow you to read ext4 files systems. Here's one for the mac: Paragon ExtFS for Mac OS X - Full Features I suppose you could allow your NAS to format the drive in ext4 and then use something like this to access it.
